I got into Windows eventually to find mcaffee using 75% of an i7 cpu. It was performing so bad i thought the hard drive was grinding itself into powder. Worst case of resource hogging security software i ever saw was mcaffee on an i7 laptop 5 or 6 years ago. Sometimes requiring the use of dedicated removal tools. Both of those i can also vouch are usually bigger resource hogs and more prone to causing performance and other technical problems. It was certainly above the other big two free ones Avast and AVG. Now such scores are never definitive for obvious reasons but it is none the less impressive. The last independent test I saw about a year ago, Windows Defender scored 100%. Someone  once described Windows Defender as using a chain-link fence to protect yourself from a swarm of angry wasps  .
